The day in the life of Room 4 Children
This week the children in Room 4 had to write down the activities they did each hour for three days. We compared these to other children in the class and put them all in a big chart. I then asked the children to complete the sentence. The most important thing for me in my day
is......Here are some of the children's work.
*You can click on the photos to enlarge them!
Afterwards the children were given 9 life essentials which they needed to cut out and sort. Their task was to stick them in order of what is most important to them. At the top of the diamond was the most important down to the least important. I think they did a fantastic job of completing this task independently. Here are some of their Diamonds.

Web of Knowledge
Today Miss Stephen introduced our inquiry focus
To kick off our Africa inquiry we made a Web Of Knowledge. When we got the ball of wool we had to say something we knew about Africa and then pass it to someone else, by the end we had a big web to show all of our prior knowledge - we had so much we ran out of wool!
Here is what we had to say about Africa. We are going to revisit the list at the end of the term to see if we got them right.
There are Zebras
It is a big country
There are a lot of people
They have meerkats
They have supermarkets
It's hot!
Lots of tall buildings
Lots of animals
There are spiders
They have restaurants
They have shops
They are poor
Colourful rocks
Different clothing
They have schools
The kill animals so they can eat
There are giraffes
They have snakes
It is far away
They have beaches
Not much water
Tall houses
They have planes
Lots and lots of houses
Rocky beaches
No toilets
Brown skin

Term 3 Inquiry
This term we are learning about our life in New Zealand and comparing it to children in another country. Over the past two weeks we have been discussing our favourite hobbies, foods, sports and things. We are also understanding where we are in the world. We used the Popplet App on the Ipad to brainstorm all of our favourite things. Here is a slideshow will all of our Popplets.
Strong Verbs
Last week we learnt that a verb is an action word, but a strong verb is a more descriptive verb. Strong verbs help the reader visualise what the writer is saying.
Together, we looked at a picture and wrote some sentences using strong verbs. The children came to the board and underlined the strong verbs.
This week we had to write our weekend story using strong verbs to enhance our stories. After we were finished we had to find all of the strong verbs using a highlighter.
Here are two of Room 4's Star Stories.

Dog Safety
Today we were very lucky to have Wayne from Dog Control come into school to educate they children (and adults) how to be safer around dogs.
We learnt what to do when approaching a friend or family members dog. We also learnt about not approaching dogs we do not know and not put dogs in a position where they are only left with one next option and that is a bite.
Wayne gave a very instructional and interactive lesson about dog safety, and he even brought his dog Mate for us to try out some of our new dog safety tips. After, we got to see Mate doing some tricks for us.
We continued with our dog safety related theme that afternoon by watching a video about dog safety. You can watch the video by clicking here.
We have an activity sheet, which we can take home, with all the tips we learnt today. We also have some board games to play in class focusing on dog safety.
Thank you very much Wayne for taking the time to give the children this fantastic tips! You can test your children on what they have learnt today by taking the online quiz here.

Pause and Think Online
As part of our Safety Inquiry this term we have looked at Internet Safety. A lot of children in Room 4 have computers and Ipads. I asked Room 4 about their computer use at home and they all told me how their parents have set up safe practices at home already. Below are some comments children have made about using the internet at their house.
- They have folders on the desktop of internet games they can click onto to get a direct link instead of typing it into google.
- They close a page by going to the x in the top left corner to close a page they shouldn't be on or if they type in the wrong page.
- They get help from an adult if something pops up and they don't know how to close it.
- They are only allowed on the computer/ipad for short amounts of time.
- They play the Blog games
- Their parents have blocked adds and pop ups.
We watched a video about internet safety and how we need to use our head, heart and gut when online. Click on the link below to view the video or have a read of the poster that sums up all the key ideas.
